With the Spinnaker Tower situated at Gunwharf Quays is now rapidly becoming the iconic feature of the South Coast particularly Portsmouth, it's easy to understand the increasing attraction of Portsmouth for visitors. The views from here are truly outstanding, especially at dusk and right next to one of the most famous harbours in the UK.

Portsmouth harbour rich in its history, is a constant buzz of activity including the warships on manoeuvres, small craft such as fishing boats bringing in a fresh catch for our homes and local restaurants, to the larger continental ferries.

Next to the Spinnaker Tower in Gunwharf is the famous Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Here you can see Lord Nelsons famous ship HMS Victory and visit the spot where he fell at the Battle of Trafalgar. Further back in time and raised from The Solent is Henry VIII favourite ship the Mary Rose where there are over 1000 Tudor artefacts. While the exciting HMS Warrior gives an insight to life aboard the world's first steel clad warship in 1860. But the Action Stations is a good half day of fun, but ensure you see the film first.

Being an historic town its not surprising that there is an abundance of museums, not just reflecting our seafaring heritage but to reflect on famous people with connections to Portsmouth. Such as the Dickens birthplace museum, and a collection Sherlock Holmes items because Conan Doyle had a doctors practice near us in Elm Grove.

Opposite Portsmouth Dockyard is Gosport with it fascinating Submarine Museum. You can access this by crossing the narrow entrance of Portsmouth Harbour on a ferry then alighting at one of the stops of the Round the Harbour trips. You can also stop at Spice Island, just a few minutes walk from Portsmouth Dockyard. Here are many pubs and can be quite lively at times. This is just next to the walls of Old Portsmouth. Walk along these to Southsea Beach, where there are two piers, Clarence and South Parade, separated by Southsea Castle with its light house. It is along this stretch the hovercraft rests on the beach during is regular trips to the Isle of Wight. Beyond the piers is the Marines museum and finally Langston Harbour and the Hayling ferry.

After all this activity you will need to relax and have a meal. Despite Gunwharf being well served with chains of expensive restaurants, the central location for locally cooked food is in the Albert Road and Elm Grove areas off Victoria Road North with the beautiful Edwardian - Kings Theatre as its centre piece. This is in the heart of Southsea, Portsmouth's resort and is the perfect area to stay while visiting the sites.
